Genital Herpes

Genital Herpes is usually caused by the Herpes Simplex type 2 virus (HSV-2), and is often characterized by genital itching, burning, or soreness, and a few small sores or clusters of small, painful blisters. In addition, patients may also suffer from fever, headache, muscle pain, meningitis, swollen lymph nodes in the groin area, painful urination, or discharge from the vagina or penis. Pain can range from non-existent to severe.

Although symptoms of genital herpes often do not show immediately, if they do occur it will normally be within two weeks of initial infection. Infection with HSV-2 is permanent, and most people who experience symptoms suffer several outbreaks each year.

HSV-2 is highly contagious, and those who are infected should use extreme care in their intimate relationships. Since transmission is possible even when you are showing no signs of the virus, regular protection is of the utmost importance.
